Fishing Tips

A great local publication called Fisherman's Post, "the saltwater fisherman's guide to NC's southern coast," contains a wealth of information, news, tide tables, events, articles and ads of interest to saltwater anglers. It is available free in places where fishermen hang out and also by subscription. They print 22 issues a year, including weekly issues between Memorial Day to Labor day. Call (910) 452-6378.EGF 10-08-07

If you're contemplating a charter fishing adventure, take time to walk around marinas where the boats are docked. Chat with different captains to see how comfortable you are with them. You're going to be out on the water with this person in tight quarters for several hours or a whole day, so pick a captain you like. Ask questions. Is he/she licensed? What are the boat's facilities (is there a "head" or just a bucket)? How far offshore does the boat go? What is the policy for bad weather? What about drinking alcohol on board?EGF 10-08-07

The most up-to-date sources of fishing information are charter captains, fishing piers and tackle shops. Frequent detailed reports also appear in the Sports section Star-News.PW 10-04-06
