Cape Fear Rugby Club Known in England as "a hooligans game played by
gentlemen," the rough and tumble sport of rugby has crossed the sea and
become a favorite with Americans as well. In Wilmington the Cape Fear Rugby
Club boasts about 100 members and is the six-time Division II state
champion. Members play and practice at the club-owned pitch (field) located
at Flytrap Downs in Wilmington. The club is always interested in recruiting
new players, social members and spectators, and the public is invited to
come out and watch. Each July, the club holds its annual Cape Fear Sevens
Rugby Tournament at Ogden Park field, off Gordon Road. Considered one of the
finest showcases of Sevens Rugby in the United States, the event attracts
about 70 teams with 700 to 900 players from all over the world. Cape Fear Women's Rugby Club If the term "rugby" brings to mind burly men with English
accents, think again. The sport is also popular with women who like the fast
pace and non-stop action. As with the men's game, the women play full
contact with no blocking. There are no prom queens here, unless you count
the club's annual Prom Dress Round Robin held in September, where players
scrum in ball gowns. In addition to round robin–style tournaments, several
fund raisers are held throughout the year, with 5 percent of the proceeds
going to local domestic violence programs. The Cape Fear Women's Rugby Club
is a nonprofit community organization open to all women. The group is always
looking for both players and spectators. No experience is necessary.
Practice is every Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM. For more information or to
sign up to play, call the number above or visit their website.
