Kite flying is a great individual, group or
family pastime and the steady beach winds are ideal for it. There are
simple, easy-to-fly kites that go up and stay up, exciting stunt kites that
do loops and dives, and even power kites to give you a good workout. For
thrill seekers, kiteboarding is the latest rage. Kiteboarding uses a large
powerful kite to pull you on a board in the water (see our
Watersports chapter). Other ideas for kites? Use a kite for marking your
spot on the beach or your beach house. Tie a sturdy kite to your beach chair
or deck railing and it will fly all day long. Nowadays, kites are made of
durable nylons with fiberglass or carbon frames, which helps them hold up to
the beach winds, and they'll last for years. Popular spots for kite flying
are the north and south ends of Wrightsville Beach, north end of Carolina
Beach and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. In fact, most of our beaches
are terrific places to fly kites, just make sure you're in a clear area if
flying a stunt kite. Please take care so that your kite and kite string
does not blow out into the water as they are very hazardous to marine life. |
