The
sands of Jockey's Ridge are shifting, but they're not blowing away. that s
what officials at the N.C. State Department of Recreation found when they
recently compared contour maps of the dunes from 1974 and 1995. The
northeast wind is largely responsible for the movement of the sand, which
has migrated from the northeast to the southwest, but only about one percent
of the sand has blown away in the past 20 years.
If
you're planning a hike or a kayak or canoe trip during the warm months, take
along some insect repellent! This is particularly important in the marshy,
soundside areas such as Pea Island or if you're intent on exploring the
quite sand islands of the sounds.
Here's
a book for the beach: Wind: How the Flow of Air Has Shaped Life, Myth,
and the Land, published in 1998, which won Roanoke Island author Jan
DeBlieu the prestigious John Burroughs Medal.
