Coastal
North Carolina, known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" because
of the number of shipwrecks lying off our shores, offers a unique experience
for divers. You can study our maritime heritage firsthand while diving any
of the several hundred wrecks scattered throughout our waters.
World
War II came closer to home than many Americans know: German U-boats prowled
the Atlantic coast. The first U-boat sunk by Americans, in fact, lies in a
shallow grave off the coast of Bodie Island.
The
Outer Banks is gearing up for an enormous celebration in 2003, when we will
celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered
flight. State officials, local groups, and aviation associations are already
making plans for this historic event.
The
Lost Colony outdoor drama presents a fascinating interpretation of the
mystery of the Roanoke colony, and the drama itself, having run now for more
than 60 years, is as much a part of the local history as the real-life event
it portrays.
