Yes, there is a camping spot in Kitty Hawk. Outer Banks International Youth Hostel at 1004 W. Kitty Hawk Rd. allows tent-only camping. For information, call (252) 261-2294.

Take it from those of us who know . . . if you leave your shoes and other useful items on the beach when you take a shoreline stroll, look for a landmark--and make sure that your stuff is above the surfline. You'd be surprised how easy it is to forget where you started from, and how easy it is for the ocean to climb the beach and snatch a blanket away.

Even though it looks like an inviting spot, camping in the four-wheel-drive area is not permitted. Local officers patrol the area regularly, and they will ask you to leave.
