spacer.gif (818 bytes)In and around Colonial Williamsburg, boredom busters abound. Where else can you converse with Colonial crusaders, relive the Revolution, or ride the Roman Rapids, all in the same day? And those are just a few of the highlights. Indeed, there's so much to see and do in the Williamsburg area, it's hard for visitors to decide what not to include on their itineraries the first--or even second--time around. After you've strolled through the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, seen the beginnings of American civilization as we know it at Jamestown, and followed in George Washington's footsteps on the Yorktown Battlefield, there still are many, many historic treasures to tour. These include the James River Plantations, along Historic Virginia Route 5; the College of William and Mary, which celebrated its 300th birthday in 1993; and a number of Williamsburg churches that date back as far as 1715.

The other attractions profiled in this chapter are of the decidedly modern sort and make an exciting complement to historic sightseeing. High-flying thrills in the various "countries" of Busch Gardens await you, as well as the wet and wild exhilaration of tube rides at Water Country USA and the downright euphoric feeling of shopping at the sprawling Williamsburg Pottery complex just off U.S. Route 60.

We admit that stretching your time and budget to make room for all Williamsburg has to offer is difficult. Our best advice is to plan ahead, choosing the activities best suited to your interests. But we also think good vacations should allow room for a little spontaneity, a walk on the wilder side, if you will. So be flexible, be outrageous, and try something completely new. And most of all, make sure you mean it when you mail off those postcards that proclaim to friends back home: "Having a great time in Williamsburg!"
