Oriental Tips

Enjoy the sights and sounds of Pamlico County's waterways by joining the annual Pamlico Paddle, which combines friends and fun on the water with explorations of local waterways by canoe and kayak. Paddlers of all experience levels are welcome to take part; call (252) 670-8465 for more information.

Handy tips and information for visitors are available at the Pamlico County Chamber of Commerce, (252) 745-3008, on N.C. Highway 55 in Grantsboro.

In his latest book, Living Waters, Oriental resident and photographer Ben Casey tracks the Trent River from its beginning as a small stream in Lenoir County to where it empties into the Neuse River at New Bern. Casey's first book, All in One River, follows the Neuse River from Falls Dam to the Pamlico Sound. Both books are available at local bookstores and gift shops.

Many businesses in Oriental close or shorten their hours during the winter. If you want information or plan to visit in the winter, be sure to call first.

Construction is underway on widening a 14-mile stretch of N.C. Highway 55 in Craven and Pamlico counties from two to five lanes, with a center turn lane. The road will be widened between an area just past Bridgeton and the bridge exits, all the way to Bayboro. The first two segments of the project were scheduled to be completed by December 2008, with five lanes completed to just inside the Alliance town limits. The final leg of the project, to the Pamlico County Courthouse in Bayboro, is scheduled for completion in June 2009.

If you want to play golf while visiting Oriental, try the Minnesott Golf and Country Club, (252) 249-0813. The course is just a few miles away — near the Cherry Branch-Minnesott Ferry dock.
