Education and Child Care Tips

The New Bern-Craven County Public Library, 400 Johnson Street, offers weekly story times for toddlers, preschoolers and school children up to 12 years old. The newly renovated Children's Department offers special programs throughout the year, including the Story Seekers program, which fosters the imaginations of children ages 10 and up through puppetry and storytelling, and the Summer Reading Book Club. The Craven County Board of Education meets on the third Thursday of the month at 3600 Trent Road in New Bern at 7 PM. All meetings are open to the public. There is a half hour public participation segment at every
board meeting that welcomes the public to express issues or concerns.
Board of Education Committee meetings are held the Monday before the
third Thursday beginning at 8:30 a.m. The meetings are open to the
public.

Oaks Road Elementary School and J. T. Barber Elementary School in New Bern, and Havelock Elementary School and James W. Smith Elementary in Havelock all require students to wear uniforms. For all other Craven County schools, the Board of Education recently adopted a strict dress code.
