Morehead CityMorehead City offers the largest selection of shops on
the Crystal Coast. Shopping opportunities are spread from one end of the
city to the other and range from clothing boutiques and craft shops to
bookstores and marine suppliers. We describe a few of the shops in the
city and have arranged them by area. As you read this section of our
Shopping chapter, note that Arendell Street, Morehead City's main
thoroughfare, is divided by a railroad track that runs from Third Street
to the intersection of Arendell and Bridges streets, a distance of about
32 blocks. |

Waterfront
Morehead's waterfront shopping section has
benefited significantly from revitalization. Sidewalks, trees, benches,
parks and gazebos invite visitors to take a stroll or sit a spell, and the
shops will entice you to come inside. Facing Bogue Sound, most waterfront
shopping fronts Evans and Shepard streets. Free parking is available, but it
can be hard to find an empty space in the height of the summer. When that's
the case, park on Bridges Street, which parallels Arendell Street at this
point, and walk across Arendell to the waterfront. Everything is close
together, so even if you can't find a parking place on the waterfront, you
won't have to walk very far.
Waterfront Junction Waterfront Junction is the place to stop for
needleworking tools, kits and accessories. The shop is well known for its
custom framing and its large and diverse stock of ready-made frames. Shop at

Dee Gee's Gifts & Books |
|
Dee Gee's Gifts and Books is a tradition on the
waterfront and continues to offer a huge selection of books, gifts for all
occasions, cards and novelties. Dee Gee's features special sections of local
and regional books, children's educational books, toys and games and
nautical charts. The staff will be happy to special-order any book. Often
Dee Gee's has book-signing parties for local authors or for authors who have
written about the area. Dee Gee's carries an excellent selection of
decorative pieces for the home and garden. Visitors and locals shop here for
special-occasion gift giving, knowing that the just-right serving platter,
vase or unique gift will be found here. Anything you select can be
gift-wrapped and shipped to your home or to the lucky recipient. As an added
bonus, Dee Gee's has a monthly contest to see just how far the store's
original newsprint bags can travel. Heading to China or Bermuda or the Grand
Canyon this summer? Take a Dee Gee's bag and send them a picture of you with
it. You may be the winner of a $20 gift certificate. The store is open
daily, and telephone orders are welcomed. You can also order books online
and they will delivered to your door or you can pick them up at the store to

Arts & Things Owners Porter and Lou Wilson offer the Crystal Coast's
finest selection of art supplies and gallery treasures that you don't want
to miss. From local art to international artists, Arts & Things offers art
for every taste. Paintings, prints, stone and wood sculptures, stained
glass, pottery and art glass can be the perfect accent pieces for any home.
Bring a favorite painting or print and have it expertly framed on site. For
beginner and seasoned artists alike, Arts & Things is stocked with art
supplies and a selection of paper, brushes, paints, pastels, throwing clay,
clay boards, easels and drawing supplies. This store also offers giclee
fine-art printing. A variety of art classes are also offered. Any trip to
Arts & Things will brighten your day or palette. Carolina Artist Studio Gallery Inc. With approximately 30 participating artists, this is a
non-profit co-op gallery operated by the artists. Members' work is
displayed, and active works in progress are sometimes visible. Members offer
classes and workshops in a variety of media for children and adults. The
classes vary so it's best to call to see what is available. Visitors are
welcome to attend special art openings and exhibits, and the receptions are
open to the public. The gallery showcases two-dimensional and three
dimensional original artwork, giclee and limited edition prints. Visitors
also enjoy the gift gallery that contains a variety of handcrafted items.

Downtown
As you leave Morehead's waterfront and
drive west (toward Newport) on Arendell Street, several shops between 5th
and 12th streets are well worth visiting. There is free street parking in
front of these stores or you can park on a side street. City News If you want a copy of the New York Times, you
will find it here, along with an assortment of local, regional and national
newspapers. Greeting cards are available, as are bestsellers and books about
local lore. You will also find maps, cold drinks and books for kids. The
store is open seven days a week, all year round. Jame's Jame's clothing, accessories & art is a specialty
boutique offering the latest in designer jeans, dresses, tops, handbags,
shoes, jewelry and more for women. This stylish shop is a local favorite and
it reflects the latest trends from New York and California. Jame's carries a
variety of designer lines, including Christopher Deane, Hudson Jeans, Rachel
Pally, Tart and Black Halo. Some men's clothing lines are also offered.
Owner Jamie Dickinson is an artist herself and offers beautiful original
paintings for sale in the boutique. Sew It Seams At Sew It Seams the emphasis is on quilting. The store
offers quilting classes with experienced teachers ready to show you how to
create your own quilts, whether by machine or by hand. If you're not
interested in quilting your own top piece, Sew It Seams can handle the job
for you. The store has 1,500 types of fabric, along with sewing patterns,
notions, books and a large collection of buttons. Sew It Seams is open
Tuesday through Saturday. Parson's General Store Located in an old Victorian home, Parson's is a great
place to stop because it has an extensive collection of gifts, nostalgia,
home accessories, seasonal decorations and sweets. The shop also offers
Hershey's ice cream. It is open all year, seven days a week. |

Ginny Gordon's Gifts and Gadgets Ginny Gordon's shop carries a great collection of
cookware, cookbooks from near and far, every cooking utensil imaginable plus
gadgets you can't do without. You'll always find good advice about kitchen
gadgets, and the helpful staff will demonstrate the workings of anything in
the store. The store now features the artwork of Bob Pittman. Ginny Gordon's
Gifts and Gadgets is open all year, Monday through Saturday.

As you leave the waterfront and downtown sections of Morehead City and continue driving west on Arendell Street (toward Newport and Havelock), you will encounter a number of small shopping centers. We have listed some of them here, enterprises that are in or just outside the city's limits but not clustered in any single area. The street addresses should make them easy to find. Just like most areas, major retailers
like Wal-mart, Kmart, Sears, Best Buy and Staples can all be found, too.
Most are easily accessible of off N.C. Highway 70. Although there's not
a large shopping mall in Morehead City, the area has slowly been
acquiring more of the larger retail stores. The Crystal Coast Plaza off
of N.C. Highway 70 is a new addition to the area, which brings some big
names in shopping including Ross, Michael's, PetSmart, TJ Maxx and Bed,
Bath & Beyond. |

Bell
Photography Bell Photography has been meeting and
exceeding the photography needs of locals and visitors since 1956. Owner
David Bell carries on the tradition of quality started by his father,
the late Gene Bell. He offers a mixture of photography styles, including
contemporary, storybook and journalistic. Whether indoor or outdoor,
David strives to keep the rates affordable and to ensure the pictures
reflect the beauty of your special day. Captain Jim's Seafood Captain Jim's Seafood is a fresh seafood market.
You'll find fresh shrimp, mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo, triggerfish, scallops
and much more. Captain Jim's is one of the cleanest seafood markets in
the county, and they'll even pack coolers for free. Stop by and let the
staff show you why they're a local favorite. Art Escapes and Frames This gallery showcases local and regional artists
and emphasizes whimsical artwork. You won't be able to resist the
prints, watercolors, sculpture, photographs and other three-dimensional
art pieces. If you have in mind a print that isn't in the gallery, ask
to see the art catalogs; they will be glad to order for you. The shop
provides complete framing services, and stylish gift wrap is available
for anything you purchase.
The Parent Trap The Parent Trap is Carteret County's only "Play
Boutique." The store specializes in high-quality toys, games, puzzles
and all the latest accessories for new and expectant parents. They also
offer nursery and children's furniture. This unique shop offers a play
space in the store with a complete activity center. Activities include
weekly music class, story time and playgroups. Parent Trap is open
Monday through Saturday from 10 AM through 5:30 PM. |

Remnant City Carpets A family-owned company, Remnant City
Carpets has served the flooring needs of the Crystal Coast area for 35
years. They sell all major brands of hardwood flooring, ceramic tile,
laminate flooring and carpet, and they have a large selection of
in-stock carpet remnants. Remnant City offers free estimates, and they
install and service what they sell. No job is too big or too small, says
owner Dean Winchell, The store is located about seven minutes east of
Morehead City at the corner of Nine Foot Road and Highway 70.
Somerset Cellars Somerset Cellars offers a wonderful
selection of wines that are sure to please. Favorites include Somerset's
Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chiaretto and Pinot Noir. Somerset
imports crushed grapes and juice to produce custom wines that are
available at wholesale and retail. Somerset also offers tours and
tastings by appointment. With a few weeks notice, this unique attraction
can create personal labels to add a special touch to a wedding,
anniversary or birthday, or to add a personal touch to your boat or
beach house. Somerset offers 25 different wines. Current hours are 11 AM
to 6 PM Wednesday through Saturday, and are subject to change based on
demand. Call for hours or a private appointment. Teacher's Pet Whether you are the teacher's pet or a teacher, a
parent or learning yourself, you are sure to enjoy this store. Teacher's
Pet focuses on all types of learning aids — everything from charts and
artwork to books and equipment. The shop features educational games and
toys for children of all ages. They offer Thomas the Tank Engine trains
and building supplies for kids. Teacher's Pet also offers tutoring.
Certified teachers are available to tutor one-on-one in the store after
school hours and on Saturday; call for fees. Shop here seven days a week
during the season. The Golden Gull Since 1975 Golden Gull has made sure women in
Carteret County are handsomely outfitted in the latest casual wear,
sportswear, dresses and after-five ensembles. The store carries a full
line of accessories to complement the clothes. Golden Gull also has a
Merle Norman cosmetics studio on the premises. The shop is open Monday
through Saturday. Lynette's Two Lynette's carries distinctive fashions for women
from sizes 4 to 20. The shop offers lovely sportswear, jewelry, gift
items, hand bags and all the right accessories. It is open Monday
through Saturday. Knowledge of Christ Books &
Gifts This store is filled with books, gifts, stained
glass, collectibles, dolls, prints and paintings. You will also find
Bibles for adults and children, as well as a nice selection of Christian
music and DVDs. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable, so don't
be afraid to ask if you don't find what you're looking for. Shop here
Monday through Saturday. EJW Outdoors EJW Outdoors has been in business for more than 50
years and recently expanded its extensive inventory with a move to its
new location. EJW continues to offer all types of outdoor gear — from
Columbia and Carhartt clothing and accessories to fishing and hunting
gear. The store also sells bikes and services fishing equipment and
bikes. EJW also features an archery pro shop with a variety of equipment
as well as bow repair and tuning. The Party Place The Party Place offers everything you need to have
a party — large or small, wild or intimate. They have a wonderful
selection of items for weddings, anniversaries, adult and children's
birthday parties and holiday parties. Whether it is paper products,
balloons, guest favors or decorations, this store has it all. The store

selection of nautical books and charts too. About one-quarter of the
store is devoted to men's and women's outdoor clothing, including
Topsider and Croc shoes. The store is open daily. The Book Shop This bookstore offers a wide selection of new and
used paperback, hard-bound and children's books at discounted prices.
Any new book not in the store can be ordered and delivered promptly. One
side of the shop carries used books, where you will find loads of
value-priced novels, cookbooks, history, kids' stories and former
bestsellers in both paperback and hardback. You can trade your used
books for the store's used books. The Book Shop is open seven days a

Tal-Y-Bont Interiors, Ltd. Tal-Y-Bont Interiors is a full-line
furniture and interior design store. The 20,000-square-foot showroom
contains a wide variety of contemporary and traditional styles,
including wicker furniture. The store will special order items for you,
but it carries a large inventory for immediate delivery, which is
especially convenient if you are furnishing a Crystal Coast vacation
home. Besides furniture, Tal-Y-Bont provides window treatments,
bedspreads, wallpaper and a large list of accessories to complete your
design scheme. And don't hesitate to call upon the talents of Tal-Y-Bont's
professional design staff. They will help you make decisions for your
entire home or just the finishing touches. The store is closed on

Jewelers Dunn's features distinctive jewelry for
women, men and children, along with many nautical creations. The store
will repair and remount your jewelry and watches and gift wrap your
purchases. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful, especially for
those of us who can't quite figure out what to select for that special
someone. For a unique gift, the store offers Atlantic Beach and Emerald
Isle destination bracelets. J. R. Dunn also has a shop in Emerald Isle. General Nutrition Center GNC is filled with products designed to promote good
health. At GNC you will find vitamins and supplements of every type, a wide
variety of herbs, items especially for kids, topical books, healthy snack
foods and a fully stocked weight-reduction section. The store also has
shampoos, scrubs and skin-care products. It is open seven days a week. |

Williams Hardware Williams Hardware is a family-owned business where
customer service is a priority. In business for more than 30 years, this
store has a good reputation and offers the usual items in addition to
carrying hard-to-find items. The staff gladly assists in special orders,
too. Williams offers specialized services such as repairing window screens,
cutting galvanized and PVC pipe, and cutting glass. The store also sells
Holland and Wilmington grills. Williams is open year round, seven days a
week.
Priscilla's Crystal Coast
Wines This shop has wines for everyday enjoyment or for
special occasions. Priscilla offers a wide selection and she can recommend
just the right wines to accompany your meals or to be featured at your
parties. The shop offers gift baskets, gourmet foods, wine tastings and
classes. Be sure to check out the section of the store called The Barn Yard,
which offers quality, inexpensive wines sure to please. Priscilla's also has
the largest selection of microbrewed and imported beers in the area. First
Friday is a special event that runs from 5 to 7 PM on the first Friday of
the month, and Free Fridays happen every Friday. |
