Around New BernOutside of the historic district, New Bern has several shopping centers and one mall. The stores we mention in this chapter are by no means all there is to New Bern shopping; we've chosen ones throughout the area to give you an idea of what's available. As you bear west on U.S. Highway 70, the
second exit after the Historic District is the U.S. Highway 17 exit. In New
Bern, U.S. 17 is named Dr. M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Many stores and
shopping centers are found on King Boulevard, which runs north to south.
Twin Rivers Mall is on King, at the end of the U.S. 17 exit from U.S. 70.
Anchor stores Belk and JCPenney have outside entrances. Inside, shoppers
have access to about 30 stores, ranging from a video arcade, electronics
boutique and pizzeria to jewelry shops and shoe stores. Across King
Boulevard from Twin Rivers Mall is Rivertowne Square, anchored by
Books-A-Million, Goody's Family Clothing and Wal-Mart. Continue south along
King Boulevard to the intersection of McCarthy Boulevard, and you'll find
Staples, Target and New River Pottery.
Bill’s Pet Shop Pet lovers will enjoy this shop at Berne
Square Shopping Center. It's worth a stop just to see the adorable puppies
and kittens on display. There are plenty of other pets available as well,
including birds, ferrets, some reptiles and a wide variety of fish. This

leashes, crates, medications and everything else you'll need to care for
your best friend. Bill's features a complete tropical and saltwater aquarium
section with a professional staff ready to guide you in the proper set up
and care of your tanks. There are sister stores in Havelock and Morehead
City. Books-A-Million Books-A-Million (a chain store with locations in the South
and West) offers every genre of book you can think of (at discounted
prices), a large number of magazines and newspapers, and an impressive
children's book section as well as reading activities scheduled throughout
the week for various age groups. The Rivertowne Square store is huge,
attractive and hard to leave. Customers are encouraged to relax in the comfy
chairs and linger over the books or join friends in the store's coffee shop,
Joe Muggs, which features espresso, pastries and more. Members of the
Millionaire's Club — requiring an investment of $15 a year — entitles you to
a 10 percent discount on everything in the store, even sale items, and you
get a free tote bag and a free cup of coffee. Cooks & Connoisseurs This wonderful specialty food store carries

AntiquesNew Bern offers plenty of antiques shops to nose around
in and discover lost treasures. Although for several years New Bern's
wonderful antique shops tended to cluster in the downtown area, over the
past few years old favorites have relocated and new ones have popped up
all over town. We've included a few of our favorites to get you started.
If you're interested in antiques shows, the New Bern Preservation
Foundation, (252) 633-6448, hosts an antiques fair showcasing invited
dealers every February (see our
New Bern Annual Events chapter). Andrea's Attic Antiques Andrea's Attic Antiques offers a fine and wide selection
of antiques and collectibles, so much we'd be hard-pressed to even begin
to list all the great things shoppers can find here. Insiders
particularly love to browse the incredible selection of antique and
vintage jewelry, although collectors who specialize in a niche will want
to explore the cut glass, hats, dishes, cookie jars, books, art and
prints, Pepsi and Coke items, and even more on display. Andrea's is open
Monday through Saturday. Jane Sugg Antiques Here you will find high-quality period and reproduction
furniture, lamps, crystal and rugs. Jane Sugg also features some
exquisite sterling tea sets and flatware. It's open Monday through
Saturday. Middle Street Antiques & Flea
Market Insiders love the selection of antique and reproduction
stained glass available at Middle Street Antiques. Hanging in the front
window of the shop, these pieces of art frame an enticing invitation to
come in and browse the antique and reproduction furniture, dishes, toys,
books and more that are arrayed in ever-changing displays. Open daily,
Middle Street Antiques is a must-see for those interested in old-time
collectibles. Tom's Coins and Antiques As the name implies, this shop sells coins and all
manner of antiques. It has beautiful antique and reproduction furniture,
estate jewelry, crystal, china, stamps and sports cards. There are lots
of nostalgic items and collectibles. Owner Tom Faulkenberry is an
appraiser and auctioneer. Seaport Antiques This market is a multi-dealer shop specializing in
quality antiques and collectibles, including china, furniture,
chandeliers, art, jewelry and more, at very reasonable prices. Insiders
find Seaport Antiques a great place to browse and look at all the
treasures. Poor Charlie's Flea Market and Antiques Poor Charlie's dealers offer just about
everything a nostalgia buff could want. The old warehouse that houses
the dealers suggests long-ago places; it's complete with a dimly lit
interior and that alluring smell of old, stored-in-the-attic stuff.
Patrons will find antiques, collectibles, home accessories, heirloom
jewelry, furniture and household items. Habitat for Humanity Resale
Store While the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store
is not an antiques store, it's one of those cool shops that offers a lot
of "stuff" you can't find anywhere else. The store regularly features an
assortment of quality furniture, tested appliances, household
furnishings and fixtures, office equipment and building materials. The
Resale Store is a terrific place to visit when you are remodeling,
furnishing a college dorm room, or looking for that special accent piece
for your home. Twice a year, the store also features fantastic
Progressive Clearance Sales, where merchandise is progressively marked
down 35 to 50 to 65 percent off in order to clear the floor for new
items. The Resale Store supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity of
Greater New Bern: to provide safe, decent housing for all families in
New Bern and around the world. The store is open Monday through
Saturday. JL Kirkman's Antique Flea Mall JL Kirkman's is located across the Neuse River Bridge
just five minutes from downtown New Bern. The flea mall, right off the
highway in Bridgeton in the old Eagle Supermarket building, prides
itself on having the highest quality solid-wood used furniture in the
area at the most affordable prices. With more than 48 vendors in its
10,000 square-foot showroom, JL Kirkman's has a tremendous variety of
furniture, glassware and home decor items. New Berne Antiques & Collectibles To find New Berne Antiques & Collectibles, just make a
left off Dr. M. L. King Jr. Boulevard one traffic light south of the
turn to New Bern High School. They're in the old Sunshine Gardens
building. If you love old stuff, you'll love browsing their many booths.
You're bound to see a "thingy" grandma used to have or a toy that brings
to mind memories of your childhood. Just about everything you can
imagine is for sale, including toys, Pepsi memorabilia and antique
tools, in more than 12,500 square feet of space. |
