The Craven Regional Medical Center has an open-heart surgery unit that makes it the nearest hospital in North Carolina's central coastal region to offer the procedure. In addition, the medical center offers state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and services at its New Bern Diagnostic Center, same-day surgery at New Bern Outpatient Surgery Center, a comprehensive medical rehabilitation center and a mental-health unit.

Craven Regional Medical Center is widely recognized as a leading medical facility serving eastern North Carolina and was the first in this part of the state to perform radiation therapy. Opened in 1962, the center is acutely attuned to quality medical care and implements a total quality management program. The 313-bed, full-service facility offers a comprehensive range of services not often found outside larger urban areas. At least partly because of that, it has been named a primary health provider for a number of area counties and, most recently, for Defense Department beneficiaries in eastern North Carolina.

An outstanding medical staff of more than 200 physicians, a dedicated professional and support staff of more than 1,500 and a progressive administration and board strive to combine the best of medical care with empathy for patients. In addition to the medical surgical areas, the medical center has dedicated units for neurosurgical, intensive and intermediate care, women's care, pediatric care and cancer care. Cardiac care is a focal point, with the area's most advanced services for diagnosing and treating heart disease, including interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery. This was the first eastern North Carolina hospital to offer cardiac rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. Its modern cardiac surgery suite includes surgical, recovery and intensive care rooms. Likewise, the medical center's oncology services lead the area in chemotherapy and radiation therapy on an inpatient or outpatient basis, including support services.

The medical center's outpatient services include the Craven Diagnostic Center, offering state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging radiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), CT scanning, stereotactic mammography and bone densitometry in a comfortable private setting. PET scanning imaging provides cancer and Alzheimer's patients with the most sophisticated diagnostic and cancer staging capabilities. You can arrange same-day surgery at the Craven Surgery Center, which include procedures for cataracts, hernias and an ever-expanding list of surgical treatments. The Women's Center offers comprehensive gynecological care, including outpatient procedures and laser surgical techniques, and the Family Birth Place stresses family involvement in childbirth.

Specialty units include Crossroads, a 24-bed facility specializing in group-based care of adult mental-health disorders, and the Coastal Rehabilitation Center, a 20-bed unit designed to help victims of stroke, orthopedic and neurological disorders return to independent living and health as soon as possible. Extended patient support services of Craven Regional Medical Center include home-care and referral services, assuring that medical needs are met and services are provided.

Located in the Craven County Human Services Complex, the public heath department offers many adult health services, including chronic disease detection, family planning and maternal healthcare, adult immunizations and a sexually transmitted disease clinic. Child health services include well child care, illness and injury care, free immunizations and cardiac and neurology clinics through physician referrals. Other services provided by the health department include the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Foods Program for children age 5 and younger and pregnant women; nutritional counseling for special diets or weight loss; a mobile dental care unit that provides screenings, dental services and dental health education; and educational programs for the public. In addition, the Division of Environmental Health, (252) 636-4936, provides food, lodging and sanitation inspections, on-site wastewater inspections, lead poisoning investigations, indoor air quality and pediatric asthma management, rabies control and more.

Urgent Care

Coastal Carolina Health Care (CCHC) is a multi-specialty medical group practice with 12 offices in New Bern and one in Morehead City. The physicians of CCHC specialize in general internal medicine, family practice, cardiology and pulmonary medicine, respiratory allergies, digestive disorders, hematology and oncology. CCHC also offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services, including mammography, bone densitometry, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), and the area’s only open bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The practice also has the area’s largest group of hospitalists based 24 hours a day at Craven Regional Medical Center to provide timely and dedicated service to patients. The CCHC Endoscopy Center and CCHC Sleep Disorder Center are available to all patients with a referral. CCHC Urgent Care is located in the new medical complex at 1040 Medical Park Way. It is open Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 8 PM, Saturday and all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas from 9 AM to 4 PM and Sunday 2 to 6 PM. During normal business hours, no appointment is necessary for CCHC Urgent Care.

Coastal Children's Clinic is proud to have offered the most comprehensive pediatric care in the area for more than 50 years. The practice specializes in pediatric medicine for children from birth through age 18. Coastal Children's Clinic is well known for providing excellence in pediatrics to the children of eastern North Carolina. The practice's 12 physicians, pediatric physician's assistant and pediatric nurse practitioner are committed to providing the highest quality pediatric care possible in an atmosphere that is both nurturing and friendly to children. They have had office hours seven days a week for more than 30 years, which is unique for this area. All three offices (New Bern, Maysville, Havelock) are open Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, and the New Bern office is open Saturday mornings 8 AM to noon and Sunday afternoons noon to 4 PM. ECIM is a large medical group practice with offices in New Bern, Havelock and Pollocksville. A team of more than 50 physicians and medical providers specializes in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics and emergency medicine. Subspecialists provide treatment in gastroenterology, hematology, neurology, nuclear medicine, infectious and pulmonary diseases, digestive disorders, arthritis, and cancer diagnosis and treatment. The practice offers full-time hospitalist service at Craven Regional Medical Center. Diagnostic services include radiology, nuclear medicine, laboratory work, CT scanning and ultrasound. This urgent-care center provides treatment for minor emergencies and family medical needs and offers "after office" and weekend hours. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 1 to 6 PM. No appointment is necessary. (ECIM Urgent Medical Care also has an office in Cape Carteret at 906 W. B. McLean Drive, (252) 393-9007, which is open Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM.) Both centers have X-ray and laboratory services as well as emergency-trained physicians and physician extenders.

The Heart Center of Eastern Carolina is a full-service cardiology practice featuring the most up-to-date services in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiac and vascular diseases. This medical practice of six board-certified cardiologists offers many kinds of non-invasive and invasive treatments: diagnostic catheterization, electrophysiology, balloon angioplasty, nuclear cardiology, peripheral vascular disease treatments, atherectomy, stent placement, pacemaker implant and follow-up echocardiology, hypertension treatment, ECP Therapy and lipid management.
