Other Good StuffBoys & Girls Club of Coastal Carolina, Inc.601 Mulberry St., Beaufort (252) 504-2465 3300 Bridges St., Morehead City (252) 222-3007 The Boys & Girls Club operates a club in
Beaufort and a club in Morehead City. The Beaufort Club was the first in
the county, opening in 1997 in the former Queen Street School. That
facility has seen some renovation since that time, and the membership
has grown. The new Morehead City Club is on the campus of Morehead City
Elementary School. Attendees spend afternoon hours with directed
programs of sports and interesting, interactive, positive goings-on.
There is also a homework time. Club activities for kids from ages 6 to
18 are available on weekdays from 3 to 7 PM. Summer and holidays bring
about expanded hours. Summer camps are also offered in full 10-week
sessions or by the week. The Boys & Girls Club also offers after-school
programs at several of the county's public schools. Morehead City
Parks and Recreation This department offers a lot of sports
programs designed to teach children the fundamentals of the games and also
the value of team participation and sportsmanship with a focus on fun. Team
sports include T-ball, basketball and coach-pitch baseball. In addition to
sports, the department hosts a number of fun activities for children and
adults. Many programs are free, but those with fees are reasonable and well
worth the cost for the enrichment they provide. Both city residents and
nonresidents are welcome to participate in the department’s programs.
Morehead City Parks and Recreation sponsors after-school programs for some
schools and offers an eight-week summer camp program for children ages 3 to
12. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the department offers a Saturday in

Kites Unlimited and Bird Stuff Kites Unlimited is a great store to explore whether you
are a kid or an adult. The store sponsors kite-flying events at Fort
Macon State Park, and everyone is invited to join in the fun each Sunday
at 10 AM, 9 AM in the summer months. Bring a kite because you'll want to
try the things you see after the demonstrations, or you can just watch.
For truly competitive kite fliers, the Carolina Kite Fest at the
Sheraton Atlantic Beach in October is also sponsored by Kites Unlimited
(see our
Annual Events chapter). Kites Unlimited has added Bird Stuff to the
store, offering feeders, seeds, houses and more. North Carolina Maritime Museum For years North Carolina Maritime Museum's education staff
has provided environmental education programs for kids and for adults. The
programs focus on coastal habitats and are highlighted by trips to barrier
island beaches, maritime forests, salt marshes and tidal flats. In the past
there have been trawling trips aboard a research vessel, bird watching,
fossil hunts and kayak trips. All museum trips are guided. There is a charge
for these fun trips, but it is worth it. North Carolina Seafood Festival Kids have plenty to do during the N.C. Seafood Festival.
Young anglers can fish in Atlantic Beach as part of the All Kids' Fishing
Classic. Prizes are awarded for the largest of any kind of fish caught, and
each angler goes home with a prize. On Saturday during festival, SasSea's
Island Playground is jumping with hands-on activities for kids only. Shade
trees, a beautiful gazebo and a playground set the backdrop for the fun.
With face painting, sidewalk chalk designs, jump rope and story telling,
this is a great place for kids and their parents during the festival. Sea Of Dreams This imaginative public playground, designed
with input from the kids who are now enjoying it, was constructed by nearly
200 residents of Carteret County. Walk through the entry towers and
encounter a maze that sends kids ages 3 and younger in one direction and the
older ones in another. Inside, there are slides, swings, ladders, spring
bridges, a balance beam, a boat, a race car and so much more that it keeps
the parking area full every day. Kids younger than 10 must have an adult
with them. Groups of 10 kids or more may reserve time to use the playground.

groups and supervised by a trained staff. The camp operates from 8 AM to

outstanding environmental education day camp. Youth get hands-on
exposure to several coastal habitats — the sound, marsh, pond, maritime

learn about coastal cultures starting with Native Americans. The youth
are with others their age, in groups for rising kindergartners to rising
sixth graders. Campers bring their own lunches. Registration for this
popular camp usually opens in January. N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores offers several
sessions of summer day camps from June through August. Each camp runs
for five consecutive days. Aquatic Adventures is for children entering
grades 2 and 3, Coastal Explorers is for children entering grades 4 and
5, and Sea Scholars is for children entering grades 6 and 7. All the
camps provide hands-on, feet-wet learning adventures. The camps require
fees and advance registration, which begins April 1. Spaces fill
quickly. See the website for the full schedule.
