diverse accommodations available. For years, only two motels served the
city, with the majority of their clientele limited to traveling members of

establishments have sprung up in recent years. We have only described a few

ShoppingWhile Havelock may not have any big shopping malls, it
does have plenty of variety. Although many of the shops are service oriented
— video outlets, hair-styling salons and laundry facilities — you'll also
find a number of furniture stores, pawn shops and military surplus outlets.
A new Wal-Mart store is being built on U.S. Highway 70 E. In this section,
we highlight a few of our favorite places. Bike Depot The Bike Depot offers Cannondale and Trek bicycles and
makes repairs on all types. The store carries clothing, accessories,
helmets and used bicycles. It's in the Century Plaza; turn into the
shopping plaza when you see the big Rose Brothers Furniture sign. The
Bike Depot is closed Sunday and Monday.

traditional wood to hand-finished water-gilded gold. The shop, open
Tuesday through Saturday, also carries prints by local artists,
including Lisa Venema, Alan Cheek and Donna Graff. Plaza Trade Center Plaza Trade Center used to be a flea market but now
sells new furniture, appliances and household items. With many new items
received on a regular basis, shoppers are sure to find something they
both want and need for their homes. Plaza Trade Center is open nearly
every day, year round (closing only for Thanksgiving and Christmas). Swiss Chalet Bakery and Cafe Insiders from Carteret and Craven counties often stop at
this bakery to pick up loaves of European-style breads made from scratch
by owners Tom and Lisa Buehler. Mouth-watering pastries, pies and cakes
are for sale too. Should you care to linger (and who wouldn't?), sit at
one of the tables, munch a luscious pastry and drink a cup of freshly
brewed coffee. The Buehlers make birthday cakes to order and provide
catering service, including box lunches and meat platters, for business
meetings and other gatherings. The bakery is open Monday through
Saturday year round. Whiteman's Engraving Whiteman's Engraving, which has proudly served the award

Annual EventsHavelock hosts a number of events that both residents and
visitors look forward to each year. We have listed a few of the larger and
most popular events. March-April Easter Egg Hunt All children younger than age 9 are invited to the park
to hunt for eggs stuffed with gift certificates, money and toys. The
hunt usually takes place the Saturday before Easter morning, but to
confirm the date, be sure to call ahead. Children need to bring a
basket. June Cherry Point Air Show June 6, 7 and 8, 2008. This is one of the largest events
in the area, with more than 100,000 people attending when the air
station opens its gates to the public. The free air show features a
variety of aerial displays of military and civilian aircraft. The
numerous static displays allow visitors to get a close look at many of
the military's high-tech aircraft. Wear comfortable shoes, as you may
have to walk a ways. Flounder Jubilee Golf Tournament This golf competition is sponsored by the Men's Golf
Association of Carolina Pines each June. There is no deadline for
entering, but early entrants are given first consideration. The event is
a two-person Superball competition. July Old Fashioned Fourth of July As the name says, this is the city's Independence Day
celebration. It is the prelude to a grand fireworks display in the
evening. For years, crowds have enjoyed a variety of entertainment,
including musical groups, clowns and games. Food is available. Havelock Four-Person Golf Tournament The Four-Person Golf Tournament, sponsored by the
Havelock Chamber of Commerce, draws a field of about 300 players. Held
in September, tournament play takes place at Carolina Pines Golf &
Country Club. October Havelock Chili Festival October 18, 2008. Havelock hosts North Carolina's Chili
Cook-Off Championship, and it really is a big deal. If you're a chili
lover, Havelock is where you need to be on the third Saturday in
October. You'll get a chance to sample some of the best chili there is.
Premier chili chefs come from all over to vie for the title of state
champion and the right to compete in the national cook-off contest later
in the year. Contestants must follow the International Chili Society's
rule: no beans of any kind. Chili without beans allows the judges to
better detect the interplay of spices and assess the consistency of the
chili. However, after submitting chili samples for judging, the
forbidden beans are often added back to the pots, and festival-goers can
pay a nominal amount at contestants' booths to taste the chili and cast
a vote for the People's Choice Award. This is one event not to be
missed, whether you like chili hot, mild or not at all. A salsa contest,
music, crafts and other displays keep everyone happy. Many local
charities benefit from the profits. December Christmas Parade December 13, 2008. Havelock hosts a Christmas parade the
second Saturday in December. Decorated floats and a visit from Santa
Claus are part of the events. Holiday music is provided by the members
of the Marine Corps 2nd Marine Air Wing Band as well as other area
bands. Christmas In The Park This is one of the area's favorite Christmas
celebrations. It is usually held on a Thursday before Christmas. The
event consists of a Christmas carol sing-along and a live nativity
scene.
